This is a list of tools for communicating online that I know, in no specific order. I made the list because I wanted to decide which tools to use with a team I was working with.

I think finding a good balance between functionality and simplicity is important. Also, being flexible about the tools is important too, I used to get too attach/rigid about the usage, but the tools are means and not ends on themselves.
